Yamit Mamo is one of the shining stars of London’s music scene- known to audiences across the capital for her powerful vocals and sensitive acoustic soul. At a young age Yamit lived in Israel’s Negev desert, before moving back to London where she spent her most formative years. During this time Yamit sought solace in music- performing from the age of 11 and writing her first song at 14. Her early influences included Ella Fitzgerald and Freddie Mercury. Prior to studying Popular Music and Recording at the University of Salford, Yamit returned to Israel- spending a year connecting to her roots whilst being inspired by the diversity and ethnicity of Israeli music. It was at university that Yamit won a songwriting competition sponsored by Universal- culminating in a performance for many hundreds of admirers in Amsterdam. Following university, Yamit moved back to London to pursue a career in music. Alongside guitarist and co-writer Neil Levene, Yamit has gradually and organically assembled a collective of talented musicians- each with sensitivity to the soulful music which they play. Yamit sings alongside various combinations of these musicians, bringing variety and character to her performances. The past year has been packed with highlights in a promising start to Yamit’s career as a powerful performer and talented writer. These highlights include the making of a documentary about Yamit’s impact on London’s flourishing music scene, directed by Sophia Garrido of the BBC. Yamit has also performed in some of London’s most prestigious venues for unsigned musicians, including The Bedford and The Regal Rooms. She performed in the opening of the BBC Proms season- singing to massive crowds in London’s Trafalgar Square in the summer of 2006. Shortly afterwards, a gig at the Secret Garden Party festival also received rave reviews for a performance standing out for it’s unique combination of intricacy and stirring vocal power. Late 2006 heralded notable success as Yamit triumphed in The Big Voice- a nationwide singing competition in aid of welfare charity Norwood. Yamit also provided vocals for the title song of upcoming British movie Death at a Funeral, directed by Frank Oz. The movie will be released worldwide in spring 2007. Recently, Yamit has written alongside Peter Biker, who previously worked with Usher, Brandy and The Sugababes as well as working closely with Charlotte Gordon of Warner Chappell- the writer of drum and bass anthem Midnight. The beginning of 2007 heralds the release of Yamit’s long-awaited EP, which will surely bring with it a year of success, progression and recognition for a real musical talent.
