I play viola, violin, clarinet and bass clarinet. Currently I mostly play viola and violin orchestrally and the clarinets for jazz, but I'm open to pretty much anything and will consider most styles (although I cannot stand serialism!)
I am approximately grade 7 on clarinet and between 7 and 8 on strings. My solo playing is subject to terrible nerves which I haven't yet managed to conquer at all but once in an ensemble situation (even a duet) it's fine! My sight-reading's relatively good for my standard, although it seems marginally better on clarinets than strings.
I currently am a musician on a project called 'Stepping Stones' in Bedfordshire which is in association with the Philharmonia Orchestra. We deliver workshops to KS1 classes (so the average age is probably 6) with the aim of helping teachers to become more confident using music in other areas of the curriculum. I also will probably be doing some other workshops with Bedfordshire Music with older students leading to participating in the River Festival in Bedford.
I have tutored a couple of string quartets at Saturday morning music school in Ampthill (now known as Ampthill Music Centre) whose ages ranged from seven to twelve, and I regularly help out at Fiddle Fiestas and Windband Days. The participants of these days have an age range of seven (sometimes six) to eighteen, and I help mainly the ones up to about twelve or thirteen; obviously the older ones tend to be able to look after themselves.
I currently play 1st violin in Luton Youth Orchestra (conducted by Chris Pascoe) and viola in Bedfordshire Youth Orchestra (conducted by Michael Rose). The repertoire for LYO has included Dvorak's Cello Concerto (with a local soloist), movements from various symphonies including Beethoven 6 and Tchaik 5, and various film medleys. In BYO I have played works such as The Firebird Suite, Glazunow's Violin Concerto (with Tasmin Little) and Mahler 1; this summer we will be playing The Rite of Spring. I haven't played a great deal of chamber music but would love the opportunity to play more.
I am looking for part-time work and would consider almost anything. I particularly would like to play for more workshops and tutor beginners/intermediate learners; if I could find an ensemble that does paid performances that would be great too.
