| | Posted: Thu 02 Jul 2009 21:46 | | So. A drummer contacts me, says he likes what I'm doing but lives an hour away from me. Luckily he lives in the same town as two other guys I'm jamming with. Cool, I say and arrange to meet him in this town an hours drive away, tonight in a free practice space. I speak to the drummer this morning, "see you tonight" I say..."yeah great!" he says.
Yes, you've guessed it...no show.
Its all good fun innit?

| | Posted: Thu 02 Jul 2009 22:32 | | Did I tell you the one about the drummer who had an unusual warm-up technique?
By day, a mild mannered HR manager...by night a terrible prog rock drummer who inserts a (dodgy) fill after every bar! He says, well its the way I play if you don't like it...weeeelll. Well, I don't like it my old china! Warm up technique? try a deafening primal sounding scream down the mic! Why???? I don't know...honest.
Now I am getting concerned. Too many nutters.
But that started me thinking... in a situation where they are ONLY nutters..when push comes to shove is there a "good" kind of nutter?
Nuts as in a bit quirky maybe? 10 Newky browns and controversial comments? Perhaps not the "stalk you to your door and murder you" type...sensitive egomaniacs?...oh they're a personal favourite!!
Come on you nutters! I'm looking for a drummer! (Oops I've just cross-posted sorry King Dan)

One guy auditioned, told us he sounded like Steve Perry. Sounded like Kevin and Perry to me.

When you are a musician it really helps to play a melody or part that is apparent to the song being played! lmao! sounds blatantly obvious but how many people have I met that haven't understood this fundamental rule in rock music particularly? I am absolutely sick of meeting musicians who just want to show off straight off the bat...Look, I can play "Surfing With The F**king Alien"...
Show off fine, but as long as it fits the arrangement/song. That's my opinion anyway.

| | Posted: Fri 10 Jul 2009 16:17 | | Back on to the subject of timewasters. so far Ive had 6 people arrange appointments to view my property to rent, only 3 of these turned up!
So after the first two "no shows" I started to get wise to the game, and ring them up a couple of hours before to check theyre still coming...the last one didnt answer the phone but after prompting them I got a text message saying they'd made other arrangements and sorry etc...oh well, at least they bothered LOL!
Now I always treat people as I expect to be treated, call me old fashoined or whatever but to me , A date is a date..you be there, or you ring and cancel and explain why....no biggie but a few manners wouldnt go amiss here.
so Steve, the hypothesis was fairly bang on, half of peeps who answer ads will waste your time.

| | Posted: Fri 10 Jul 2009 21:14 | | Just to add a big yes: i despise discourtesy.. i often wonder; does it come from a general lack of empathy..? Do people who act so inconsiderately in their "professional" arrangements with others behave in the same way among their family and friends?
Yeah there's a lot of nutters around, too...some seriously deluded folk....has anyone come across any cases where a "musician" seems to obsess over technical or technique based points and issues, and yet doesn't seem to actually have any native creativity or musical understanding whatsoever? I've wondered in the past whether they do the one thing to hide the truth of the other..even from themselves. Why do they do it? Do they think they'll never be found out? Or do they really not realise that there is something missing in themselves?? Should we feel sad for them, or what? It's difficult to be rude to them, i know, it's so often like kicking a puppy...
