Hello Chaps and Belles

As the title would suggest, there is a buzzing noise emitting from my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Valve Amp when it is turned on.

It makes this noise even when the guitar is turned down and the pedals are disconnected, suggesting the problem lies with the amp itself. It's almost like a waspish noise that seems to vary in pitch slightly like a moped changing gear. There's no other devices near the amp and no lights on, and it hasn't done this before. There's no hum or crackling, and I even tried it with the noiseless pickup-equipped telecaster and different leads etc, but no dice, just the same buzzing sound.

Any ideas what could be causing it, whether it's pre or power amp or something to do with a valve or two needing replacement, or something else?

My idea was to phone a local music shop but I thought one of you wise types might be able to assist first....

I'm not huge on valve amps but from what knowledge I do have it sounds like the problem lies with your pre-amp valves. Probably best to get it looked over by a good tech to rule out any other potential problems before fitting new valve(s).

Cheers buddy - a local music shop here was just well-rated in Guitar magazine for its valve amp servicing so might give them a call. Just when I was about to crank it up and start using my new volume box!

No probs! The problem could lie elsewhere but the pre-amp tubes are the most likely culprit. The techs will figure it out. Power amp tubes are usually well behaved for quite a while.

A Remus Sound in Barton St. Although I guess I could try Soundhouse. Remus charges £20 to have a look at it

Your tubes could've gone microphonic.

however my hot rod deluxe also has a buzzing sound but only on the clean channel. microphonic valves usually makes a feedbacky kind of sound

i only ever use the dirty channel anyway, and hardly ever gig with it.

Yeah it's only just started after 4 years so might need replacing, all i use is the clean channel because it's so sweet and tasty! Got that volume box yesterday which helps

I had a similar problem with my Blues Deluxe and it turned out to be a microphonic preamp valve. I have just fitted one of Watford Valves cryo preamp valve kits, which not only makes the clean channel sound even better but the valves are supposed to last longer. Only time will tell on the second point of course. If your preamp valves have been in four years they are probably due for a change.

Yeah, it was unused for about a year in that period, plus it's never been cranked apart from 1 band practice and last week since I got the volume box. But I think the time is nigh - just can't spare the cash just yet!

Transformers can sometimes buzz too, especially if the end bell (no offence) is loose.

The metal plate that sits over the top of it. Can vibrate.

Can be fidly to fix, but harmless. Sounds a bit like a neon light buzz, if that makes sense, but probably higher frequency.

that's interesting about the transformer- but my buzz is only on the clean channel - i will have to get it checked out at some point, it just hasnt become inconvenient yet...

I'd say to replace all the valves - get some JJ's in there...

Power valves usually last the least amount of time though so could be them... Go to www.eurotubes.com for some nice shiney ones - they're quite cheap and there's some very useful information on tube changing and biasing etc... - and there's some full re-tube kits for common amps including the hotrod deluxe at a very reasonable price. (my amp's never sounded so good).

They certainly do - I got mine there - my amp's rocking!! Quick delivery too - less than a week for mine. The shipping was something like £20 - which concidering the price of tubes here is a massive saving!

So technically I could order the Hot Rod Deluxe full revalve set for $65 and then $20 shipping? So that's $85 for a whole new set of tubes? MINT. Perhaps I'll have that for xmas instead of the Reverb pedal...how easy are they to fit myself or is it best to get an expert to fit them?

You could fit them yourself no problem - ignore all that 'you might die' cr*p you read off sites about valve changes - pretty impossible unless you soak the amp with water and then yourself and jam you hand inside the amp. Have a read of the site - they talk about how to bung them in etc... (use contact cleaner (£3.50 from Maplin) on the prongs, and use rubber gloves to prevent hotspots which can cause valves to fail)

The only trouble is with biasing the amp (easy - but fiddley) You'd need a cheap multimeter (£5-£10 from Maplin) a bias probe ---> http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/product_info.php/info/p471_Kit-Bias-Probe-Octal.h tml and a tiny screwdriver - the recommended mAmp setting for your amp is just under this video as a reference --> http://eurotubes.com/euro-Fender-DeluxeV.htm It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it - It makes the amp sing big time!

All that extra stuff will serve tube changes for years to come so it's worth it (not all that expensive really - about £30 - still cheaper for the eurotubes tubes and all that stuff, than just the valves in the UK)

BTW - JJ tubes are really good - they make a substantial difference!!
