Anyone got any advice as to what we'd need in terms of basic stage lighting for a 5-piece band. Don't want to pay a fortune either.. just some basic lighting. As a band we don't know a lot about the subject to be honest.

Cheers

I suppose a lot would depend on what sort of venues you are hoping to play mark. Obviously you would need more for clubs, than you would for pubs. Or are you being modest, and heading for the arenas ?

Having discussed with various people and done a load of research, I decided on 4 par 36 basic cans with various coloured gels split across two 2.5 metre lighting stands - 2 cans per stand. This should give us a basic lighting setup. The intention is to get another 4 cans so we end up with 4 per side.

FWIW

Unless you're doing very small venues you'll find par 36 cans to be a bit puny.

You'll need at least par 56 cans or preferably par 64s.

I'd be looking at led cans due to almost unlimited colours, you can set them to control themselves and they don't fry your forehead at close range. A bit pricey though.

Ah t'would be nice to be able to afford 56s or 64s but alas pockets are not that deep. As long as we're visible then I'm happy.

C'est la vie

Definitely LED cans.

Unless you actually want to sweat like Paul Gadd in a school playground.

LEDS are (literally) cool! But cost more. Still, they use loads less power, more colour options, not so hot, and if an LED blows in the show, no-one will notice. But you pay for these benefits!

I looked at 56s and LEDs but the band isn't earning enough right now to justify the outlay. I've got a very basic 4 x 36 can rig that can be upgraded when the band starts to earn properly. I know it'll be underpowered but it's what we can afford right now.

Thanks to all for the advice and help. Much appreciated. I've learned a lot over the past week or so
