As my band still cant find a singer (after over a year of looking) we have two problems
a) I'm having to sing so we know where we are in songs at practise
b) we have no songwriter, so no original lyrics
So, my cheeky request is, does anyone who writes lyrics wanna write some for us cos everything i write is crap. (think crass/ Dead kennedys sort of thing)
thanks

One source of original material is the G7 and Sibelius web-sites. Users of the software quite often post demos of their songs. I've found that a polite request to cover songs there results in a yes. If you record it and a it's a hit then you can work out a deal.
Myspace, and the like, are also a useful resources as lesser known acts might like the idea of other acts covering their material as a way of getting the word out.
In every case remember these people would like to benefit from their labours so if you start t make money from one of these songs it's only fair to work out a deal. Certainly make sure, at gigs, that you let the punters know where you got the song from.
Legal bods I'm sure are ranting saying you really must get it all in writing and I take their point but:
1) most of us will never make a profit out of making music
2) even less make a profit out of a particular song
So I say that if we're all decent to each other it all works out, so if you want to build a relationship with a number of song writiers make sure they're people you can work with.
