Hi all,

Recently I got a few sets of strings of t'internet and put them on me guitar - I was having problems with the intonation previously but when I put the strings on the intonation was perfect! Has anyone had the same thing happen?

Oh - the strings were GHS's - really good too!

Had you changed string guage? Just changing to the next guage up or down has a profound effect on the guitars action. If it's the same guage then it's probably just pot luck. My Squire fender refuses point blank to tune properly on the G string. Not to bothered with that guitar though... so long as I can get it close enough. Always a compromise tuning guitars. Surprising how many guitarists don't understand setting intonation and complain that their guitar never sounds in tune! Does your guitar have a Floyd Rose trem? God, I hate those things. I prefer fixed bridges... i've always blocked my Strats off with a bit of wood and tightened the spring tension. Glad it's sorted for you. Would have pissed me off no end, especially if it was out on a few strings.

It's a Fender Jaguar with the floating Tremolo thingy mabob - Didn't change the guage though - really wierd - it's totally sorted, not a note wrong no matter where I play on the Fretboard. I would take the tremolo out of both of my guitars (other is a strat with stock trem) if I didn't use them so much - I would suggest to anyone who doesn't use their trem to make it static or put in a fixed bridge...pain in the donkey they are sometimes - Especially Floyd roses - you get them perfectly in tune, working nicely and then...string snap...start again!!

I read an article or forum post on intonation last night (which alas I can't find right now) that explained that when you set intonation on a guitar you can get it more or less mostly right on the Es, the A, the D and the B, but that due to the laws of physics the G is basically impossible to get right - something to do with the ratio between the mass of the string and its length somehow being the worst possible combination mathematically for practical purposes - so all you can do there is get it as near as you can and hope for the best.

This rings true for me as I have often had problems with G strings.
