Did anyone see 'The Story of The Who' t'other week on tele? Loads of footage and stuff that I hadn't seen before. Well worth a purchase on DVD for music lovers and fans - at least I think it's on DVD. Great couple of hours of documentaryness.

Well done, Chris - the self-proclaimed 'beyond virtuoso' has spoken. Now f*ck off, tedious one.

Damn! Missed it Fraser! Will have to look for the DVD or a repeat showing. What channel was that on?

There are some little gems on SKY Arts sometimes. The Strat Pack concert was on sky arts last nite, missed half of it but it's repeated at 8am this coming Tuesday. Bit early so i'll be setting the DVD recorder. There's a few Hendrix docu's on Sky Arts tonight too! Now just got to pursuade my missus to sit through it. It's ED-U-KAY-SHUNAL!

I saw it -- it was fan bleedin tastic, they've always been a favourite band of mine mainly the early stuff but I also found the insight into band dynamics interesting, I think it was on BBC2 and then repeated a couple of weeks later on BBC4 so I'm sure it will come around again (probably as a fill in when Jools Holland isn't on)

Sometimes I find those band biography things so boring with loads of talking heads who claim to be best friends and inspirations yakking on about the musician's motivation when really the only thing they knew about them was their inside leg measurement from taking their drycleaning to have the gussets reinforced.

I'd like to watch it again though I seem to be left with a sense of Pete Townshend's arrogance and Roger Daltrey's immense patience and graft, but that might be my opinion...( and the copious bottles of Becks i accompanied it with)

Anyhoo back to work....

It was on Beeb2, Gilly - as Elaine said. I'm afraid I don't have Sky, so not going to be able to catch the Hendrix thing - bet it's a bewt, though!

Yay, Elaine - credit to Daltrey; it must have been difficult for him, for a long time, to be only considered a 'mere singer', as Townsend described, whilst the other three basked in musical geniusness; and as you say, the band dynamics, gaining of confidences and developments etc was hugely interesting. Was good how Townsend finally described his relationship with Daltrey, saying how you couldn't get two more different people if you tried, but in the end, they considered each other as brothers - bless.

In any case: epic band - epic story.

I saw it when it was on before...(can't remember the channel) i've never liked them, really; dunno why, think it's just one of those chemical things, y'know.. but i have to say i did find the documentary very watchable and informative and entertaining despite that- and though it hasn't turned me into a fan of the who in any way, it did at least give me an insight into why other people DO feel so passionately about them..summat i was completely bemused by before. At least, now, i'm much less inclined to consider them overrated. So it must've been a good documentary, right? That's me saying it was good, by the way.....

Q: does "context" inform and improve ones appreciation of an individual piece of art, or just sully the uninformed and thus unbiased opinion of the viewer? Hmm. Maybe i was right about them before, and now i've been brainwashed!

Why does a certain person keep removing his posts after a couple of days when he doesn't get the response he's after... Or perhaps he does.... Hmmmmm!

Even if ya don't like the band - I agree, Andy - it should be very difficult to call them over-rated. I mean, you only need to listen to 'Quadrophenia' (I'm thinking of the '73 album, rather than the film soundtrack album), 'Tommy' and 'Who Are You' albums etc - excellent works; some great songs.

Townshend's extent, dimension and style of creativity is quite something, I think; and the totality of what the band has done; not to mention the individual musicianship of the chaps.

Twas a good 'un, Pete - twas.

I watched half of it before I fell asleep (drunk) However I was enjoying it so much that Deryn got me a copy for our anniversary. Brilliant stuff. The Who are and always have been a great band and really good live
