Guitar player, bass player, percussion, some vocals

Looking for members for a virtual band who are recording music to be published on the web. For the listener, the idea is to mix the experience of listening to an album with that of going to a gig. We write songs, record them and then publish them on their website but the songs, like websites, are always under construction and never deemed finished. This means any member of the band (or public) can replace bass parts, do a re-mix, re-structure the song, re-write and re-sing the lyrics, add solos, percussion, re-master or whatever. So the listener plays the music on the website like they might an album but the music changes as it might during a tour.

For the band, the idea is to replace the process of physically going to the rehearsal studio to work out songs with a process of embellishing already recorded material to work out songs.

The idea is that a song is written and a 'skeleton' version is recorded. This could be (but doesn't have to be) an acoustic version of a song with a single acoustic guitar and a single vocal track. Then other musicians can build on what's been recorded. Of course in any song feel is of utmost importance, so any skeletons should have a good feel already. Feel often comes from the drummer and of course a skeleton could have percussion but any rhythmic instrument can provide a feel. It's possible to get a good feel even if the tempo is constant throughout the track. Constant tempos make editing easier but this is in no way a necessity. As well as entire songs, snippets are also offered to use within new songs. Anyone is welcome to re-master the tracks for publication on the web.
Each track or channel that goes to make up a song is made available on the website as a .wav file for download by whoever wants it.

All the music should be creative commons copyright. This is partly because we find the idea of copyright and intellectual property ludicrous - much like claiming ownership of the air you breathe. In a perfect world we wouldn't copyright anything but then of course somebody might come along and do that and then start profiteering which isn't what this is about. Feel free to download, copy, cover or steal any of the music on the website.
A word about mastering. I used to think mastering sucked. Why? Because despite living at a time when a cheap digital dictaphone can record and playback an almost perfect representation of any sound, it's not good enough. And the reason it's not good enough is because mastering engineers come along, take a live recording of a band and then master it so that it doesn't sound real anymore and then pass it off as a 'professional' recording. In other words the only thing that sounds professional to the consumer is something that isn't real. I still feel that some mastering engineers add too much fairy dust but now I've grown older and mellowed I think it's an essential part of the recording process and as this is a recording project then we invite mastering engineers from far and wide to join us in our quest to entertain, educate and have a ball in the meantime.
