We are a new
band called Surprise! The music is Beatles/The
Feeling with a north london anti-folk lyrical
slant. We are musically adventurous with our
arrangements and like to write in quite a poppy
format. Irony and lyrical charm ar very important
to us. We have all been in moderately sucessful
bands before, touring, radio, singles, festivals
etc.
We have just finished our first set of demos and
have another batch being mixed at the moment.
We have just started playing the demos to
managers and agents and have had real interest in
working with us and we now need to replicate our
sound live. Our previous bass player lived in
Birmingham and the rest of us are based in north
London and this was becoming too difficult to
manage and so we are looking for someone equally
talented who is closer to the rest of us.
The next phase will be to play a few low key
shows before the end of this year whilst
garnering interest amongst industry contacts with
the demos and then showcasing in a more high
profile way and perhaps doing a press release
single early next year.
Backing vocals are a bonus, as is double bass.
Get in touch if this sounds interesting to you.
BIOG:
Surprise! Is the calamitous mind meeting of four music geeks in north London. Olly and Beard play in pop star’s backing bands, living parasitically off the boon of the X-factor and Pop Stars, they met Jekey after he left the biggest rock band Hungary has ever seen and plucked Tekken from a crazy prog-rock band purely because he had a cool name.
Their music is a cacophony of styles, an irreverent post-modern pastiche of pop gone by. Olly’s lyrics are at once whimsical and profound, ‘I tried writing a song about the Iraq war and it came out like a twisted Christmas carol’ he says of Calypso stomp ‘Jack Frost’. 'Lets Go To LA' is at once wide-eyed and sarcastic and contains a guest vocal from LA scene legend Kim Fowley who gave the band it's name. ‘Happy On TV’ is a swipe at meritless celebrity but Olly acknowledges that ‘we all want fame and fortune without having to work for it, that kind of makes Jade Goody culturally more important than Tony Blair, its more vulgar to pursue fame incessantly than it is to kind of stumble on it accidentally’. Tekken says ‘Ye’.
Ironic, narcissistic, and pogo-ing ‘Everything Will Be Alright… For Now’ is about the silver lining before the cloud and is exactly the sort of mischievous and inventive pop that made London the centre of the universe in the 60’s, only now it’s the naughty’s and that is far more befitting of Surprise!
