My name is David Mortara and I am both a musician and researcher of Peruvian coastal music traditions based in London, England. I play the Peruvian cajón (box drum), having been introduced to this instrument in 1991 by Eusebio Sirio "Pititi", the cajita (knock box), quijada (jawbone) and checo (calabash drum). I have studied Peruvian folklore with the venerable musician Pepe Villalobos Cavero, Peruvian cajón with Manuel Vásquez Goyoneche and I count on the friendship of many great musicians from Peru, including the guitar master Carlos Hayre Ramírez.

I have founded Malambo, "a group of international musicians in London, fascinated by the potential that Peruvian coastal music traditions offer for their own composition and performance." I play percussion and sing backing vocals in the group.

In 2005, I helped establish a special collection on Peruvian coastal music within the British Library Sound Archive, and worked on the publication entitled Los Cuatro Ases De La Jarana (Vocal Duels from the Streets of Lima) with Guillermo Durand of the National Cultural Institute in Peru - see http://www.bl.uk/collections/sound-archive/pdf/imcon27.pdf
