Biography.
On a humid summer night back in 1999, in the darkest little gothic bar in the dankest corner of Stoke on Trent, Lucas Swann was spinning tunes of desolation and despair. As DJ and MC at this decadent and wonderfully trashy venue he presented a weekly gathering of Goths, punks and misfits a reason to venture out, in their finest regalia, through the unwelcoming streets of this somewhat insular town. This particular night Dean Hathaway attired in Samurai Skirt, Steel Body Armour and waist length black and red Mohican, made his first visit to this infamous haunt…The Sutherland Arms.
Introductions were immediate, both instantly recognising in each other common ground, not only in music, but also in visual representation. During the course of the evening Lucas handed Dean a CD containing two musical tracks, requiring lyrics and a melody to turn them into songs. Within a week Bows and Angels and When You’re Dead were born. With original guitarist Pete Pullman the three of them placed an ad in the local press for a bass player. Robert Baker replied and secured the position completing the foursome and UNINVITED GUEST was born in the spring of the new millennium.
Within the next couple of months the original guitarist left and having already worked with him before, Lucas suggested Shaun Cope as his replacement. Now with a strong line-up and determination the band began writing material, at this point they did not know where it would go, if they would play live or indeed record anything. It was an experiment, no rush, no agenda, but a world of new ideas to explore.
The material came slowly but steadily, several early demos receiving good reviews in the gothic scene magazines such as Kaleidoscope and Meltdown. By the spring of 2003 the band had enough material for their first official self-release Orchestrated Chaos. Containing 6 tracks this too then received rave reviews from the press. Encouraged by this response the band worked hard writing material to combine with reworked versions of the Orchestrated Chaos tracks, the result being in January 2005, the release of their first full length album Faith In Oblivion.
The press greeted Faith In Oblivion enthusiastically, and the band knew it was time to present their eclectic mix of esoteric musical dynamics and poly-sexual visuality to the public. The bands first live appearance was at the Beyond the Veil festival in Leeds in 2005. It was a triumphant debut and the band was soon invited to play elsewhere, including all the main Gothic events in the UK - Gotham 2005, Beyond The Veil 2006 and the world famous Whitby Gothic Weekend 2006. All these performances received rave reviews, and exalted the band set about writing material for a follow-up album.
In March 2007 Robert Baker decided to leave to pursue a more prog-rock direction. The rest of Uninvited Guest carried on working on the new material, this time they wanted an even more diverse album, musically and lyrically, it was a challenge and the band were determined to rise to it and surpass what they had created previously. When all the recording was complete they knew they had done just that, and Malice In Wonderland, as the new album was to be called, was ready to take on an unsuspecting world. Still a three piece the band needed a new bassist so Uninvited Guest placed ads online, eventually filling the position with Jane Dalton, aka Miss 616 (formerly the creative mind behind ‘Squid’ and ‘616 Abortions’).
Now it was time to up the ante, armed with an album of unparalleled drama and emotion, searing musical soundscapes and brave and uncompromising lyrical concepts surely it was time for the industry to yield? And yield it did, in the form of the German Record Label, Maddening Media. Having heard just three tracks from the new album on Uninvited Guest’s myspace page, Maddening Media approached the band to release Malice In Wonderland in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece and the BeNeLux countries. The band agreed and the Uninvited Guest/Maddening Media partnership was secured with an official release date of 21st March 2008 for the album.
And so, with industry support, Uninvited Guest with their passion for dramatic and engrossing musical backdrops behind intelligent and involving lyrical observations are ready to wake up the scene once more. And to dress it all up in elaborate Glam/Goth finery, for which they are renowned. Prepare to be awakened, prepare to be enlightened; ladies and gentlemen, I give you, Uninvited Guest!
